Kathy Hixon from Hood Hargett Breakfast Club took Radio One Charlotte’s #FamilyDancePartyCLT to the Wells Fargo Championship to help raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina chapter in memory of her husband, Carl. Carl died in January of this year after battling dementia for several years.

Kathy thinks there were many subtle signs that she didn’t recognize before he was diagnosed in 2018. However, what got her attention was when her husband, a successful sales executive, was unable to calculate a tip at a restaurant. Though he had an exceptional sense of humor and could find laughter in almost any situation, he struggled with his cognitive decline. Carl loved playing golf, but gave it up because he didn’t want other golfers to know he could no longer tally his scores.

She found Teepa Snow videos on YouTube helpful in giving her a better understanding of the phases of dementia. Kathy says, “education is so important.” When asked what advice she’d give to people trying to navigate dementia care for a spouse she adds, “be kind to yourself.”

In memory of Carl’s epic parties, Kathy joined Ramona Holloway’s fundraising mission and coerced her friends Bonnie, Laurie and Ann to dance with her at the Wells Fargo Championship Tee Off concert. She says the ladies behind them just joined right in!

Check out her video and the special party T-shirt she wore on Facebook!
