Can Seltzer Water Aid Weight Loss?

PEOPLE magazine reports that drinking plain carbonated water might offer a slight weight-loss advantage due to its bubbles, according to a study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health.
Researchers found that the CO2 in seltzer could enhance glucose uptake and metabolism in red blood cells, potentially supporting weight management.
However, Dr. Akira Takahashi, one of the researchers, emphasized that carbonated water alone is not a solution for weight loss, as the benefit is minimal and unlikely to make a noticeable difference on its own.
Seltzer water may also act as an appetite suppressant. When consumed, the release of dissolved gas in the stomach can create a sense of fullness, reducing hunger and possibly limiting food intake.
Despite these potential benefits, carbonated beverages aren’t for everyone. Some people may experience bloating or gas, and those with digestive conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may find that fizzy drinks worsen their symptoms.
Importantly, the study focused on plain carbonated water. Sweetened or diet sodas, which are linked to heart issues and often contain added calories, do not offer the same benefits. While seltzer can support satiety, it’s most effective when paired with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
