Shonda Rhimes expressed her condolences for Eric Dane’s passing, calling him a “beloved member” of the Grey’s Anatomy family and praising his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan.
Eric Dane’s death at age 53 was due to a battle with ALS, a nervous system disease with no cure, marking 20 years since his debut on Grey’s Anatomy.
Eric Dane joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 2 and remained on the show until 2012, with his character, Dr. Mark Sloan, leaving a lasting impact on the series.
Dane reflected on his exit from the show, attributing it to personal struggles with addiction and the network’s cost considerations, acknowledging that he was likely fired.
Dane admitted that his sobriety was compromised during his time on Grey’s Anatomy, stating that he was “f**ked up longer than [he] was sober” and struggled with the overwhelming fame and pressure.
